How often do you watch movies? Pretty often? Cool, me too. And what’s your favorite movie genre? Do you know how to talk about movie genres in English?

Well, if you are not sure about how to answer this question, learn all the basic movie genres and sub-genres. After you are done with that, have fun with these games and exercises below. Before that, take a look at some information that will help you with the exercises below.

What is a genre?

The word genre is a noun and it means “a style, especially in the arts, that involves a particular set of characteristics.” Basically, a genre is a category. We use it to describe movies, books, and music. Here a few examples:

  • Pop was her favorite genre of music.
  • What is your favorite book genre?

I love watching romantic comedies. That’s certainly my favorite movie genre.

How many genres are there?

How much do you know about the history of movies? Just to give you some context, movies date back to the 1890s. That’s when the first moving picture cameras were invented. Since then, many things have evolved — including the movie genres. In the early days of cinema, movie genres were more defined. Today most movies are a hybrid of genres or they end up falling in one of the sub-genres. The basic genres are:

  • Action
  • Comedy
  • Drama
  • Fantasy
  • Horror
  • Mystery
  • Romance
  • Western
